Day 55 Little Lance

This is Lance. He is Cessna's four year old brother.
He was just a little concerned about the pictures of Cessna yesterday, and wanted to make sure that he was in the pictures too. He posed for this first one himself, and asked me to take him holding Gracie. So he is my photo today, even though it was technically taken yesterday.
Here is Lance again, enjoying the Sting Ray exhibit at the Acquarium. It was pretty funny how he was not quite ready to touch them, but he was encouraging Rory to. He even pushed her arm down a lot farther when the sting Ray's approached her. In this shot, you can see the Ray right under them, and I really liked their reflections in the water.
I struggled with the photos yesterday at the Acquarium . All of the ceilings are high, there is NO natural light anywhere, and the walls and ceilings are all painted black.
Does anyone know what to do, other than raise the ISO really high? I took a few with flash. They were even worse.

  1. Look at that handsome boy. I hope he did not upset Rory by shoving her hand in the water! That is a precious photo of the two of them though :)

  2. I just use my flash in those situations (and find that if I raise my ISO too high with the flash it washes everything out, so I just use an ISO of around 800. I love when the kids want to get in the pictures and help me with my "picture of the day, and I can see that Lance took his job very seriously!

  3. You could try in those situations to add a bit of flash--using your flash compensation to dial down your flash so you get a bit of light without the flashy look. But really, you did good considering!

  4. Wonderful capture :). Agree about dialing down the flash. I'm learning more and more about the flash. It's starting to click :)

  6. Its a beautiful shot nonetheless.
Regarding the flash- I believe in the menu settings of most cameras, there is a way to tone down the level of the flash so it doesn't go off quite as brightly. Also, you could try a diffuser to soften the flash. Somewhere floating around on the web is a tutorial for making your own diffuser out of wax paper- I made one and it was real easy.

  8. I love the shot of Lance with Gracie. I caught Lincoln trying to pick up Willard the other day. I think the aquarium picture looks great especially for low lighting, but I'm enjoying reading about what one should do from the others. Too funny that he was encouraging Rory to touch a sting ray.
